City of Surrey

The City of Surrey is one of the fastest growing, culturally diverse cities in Canada with a vision to be a thriving, green and inclusive community. Metro Vancouver’s largest city by land area and second largest by population, Surrey is a forward thinking, globally recognized leader in building vibrant, sustainable communities through technology and innovation.

What happened/What we did

In support of a new Climate Change Action Strategy, this engagement strategy will inform a roadmap and an equitable path to reach Surrey’s 2050 targets, shift away from fossil fuel dependence, and position Surrey for the low carbon economy of the future, while improving the health and resilience of all of Surrey’s communities and ecosystems to the impacts of climate change. The key take-away: We know where we need to go. We know what it will take to get there. How can we work together to make this happen?

The campaign is grounded in the revitalized City Brand Identity, positioning climate change work as exciting and progressive with an approachable tone.

A Vision of the Future

The City of Surrey’s vision for 2050: The City has transitioned its own buildings, vehicles, and infrastructure into zero-carbon, resilient assets, helping to catalyze larger positive changes in society and markets. Working together with its partners, the city is a leader in equitable climate action and community engagement.

The long-term vision for engagement was for the community to understand the local impacts and risks of climate change and be empowered and inspired to take action, both in their own households/businesses and in collaboration with the City and other organizations.

The communications goal was to position City of Surrey as a Climate Action Catalyst by showing Surrey taking action to reduce emissions and improve resilience to climate change impacts and supporting the zero-carbon market transformation supporting our vision to be a thriving, green and inclusive community.

Five Pillars of Climate Action

A set of five pillars (themes) were illustrated by RDC, from five high fidelity representational images to aligned icons that would reproduce best for a broad range of applications.

  • Zero-Carbon, Resilient Neighbourhoods

  • Safe, Zero-Carbon Transportation

  • Healthy, Zero-Carbon Buildings

  • Climate-Positive, Resilient Ecosystems

  • Bold City Leadership and Governance
