Nisg̱a’a Language & Culture

Website

Following the redesign of the Nisga’a Lisims Government website, the Language and Culture Department asked RDC to create a dedicated digital home for language revitalization and cultural connection. The goal was to create a welcoming online space for Nisga’a people on the territory and in urban communities alike, and to build a site that feels connected to land, culture, and community from the first moment of arrival.

The Challenge

Language and cultural resources had previously been housed within the broader government website, without the focus or presence needed to support learners, knowledge-keepers, and community members reconnecting with culture. Many Nisga’a members, particularly those living away from the territory, faced barriers to access and participation. What was needed was a space that felt open, approachable, and grounded in Nisga’a identity.

The Approach

Through engagement with Elders, cultural advisors, and staff, RDC helped shape a site that feels warm, barrier-free, and easy to navigate. User needs informed the structure, tone, and content pathways, including clear access points for Elders and for those at the beginning of their learning journey.

A dedicated section for Elders was built into the site with a direct pathway to it, featured on the home page, ensuring that the Nation's knowledge-keepers are visible and centred from the moment anyone arrives.

The visual language was developed with cultural guidance and rooted in Nisga’a forms, patterns, and relationships to land. References to local plants, fish, and woven structures were translated into a digital experience that feels immersive rather than simply informational, helping users feel a stronger sense of connection to place, culture, and community.

The Outcome

Launched as nisgaalanguage.ca, the site gives the Language and Culture Department a dedicated platform with its own identity while remaining connected to the broader Nisga’a Lisims Government presence. The result is a website that does more than deliver resources. It creates a vivid, welcoming experience that supports language learning, cultural pride, and ongoing community contribution, with room to grow as needs evolve.
