Tahltan Nation Development Corporation

In a vast region in Canada’s north known as the Golden Triangle, the Tahltan people have developed the best ways to manage the rich resources in their territory. Talented and welcoming, the Tahltan Nation Development Corporation’s workforce provides the skills and infrastructure to support resource companies and other development enterprises. From airports and airlines, to roads, telecommunications and power generation, the TNDC leads with a united vision to succeed while respecting the natural environment.

What happened and what we did

Tahltan Nation Development Corporation was established in 1985 and since then has established a reputation as an experienced, qualified, reliable and competitive company focussed on safety, quality and integrity through its work on hundreds of resource and industrial projects. Today, TNDC is one of the largest employers in Northwest British Columbia and in the top 5% of all British Columbia-based companies. As it has grown, TNDC’s brand identity has needed to evolve with that growth. It required updating that communicated the company’s strength and confidence and it’s unique indigeneity.

The Tahltan Central Government’s rebranding is the result of hours of research, strategy development and co-creation with TNDC leadership and staff, in collaboration with Tahltan cultural and language advisors.

Outcome

The new TNDC wordmark is a simple and bold typographic element, showing how the Tahltan community is connected and that they support each other. The mark consists of the crow and wolf icon combined into one shape and, importantly, sharing “one eye.”

The identity celebrates Tahltan language and culture while supporting the traditional values of its diverse Tahltan Community through clear and consistent use, inspiring confidence, teamwork, and leadership. The brand is imbued with the pride and the bond that employees share in this company.

The identity is apparent and clear on the job site, with its strong graphics on vehicles and machines, to signage and apparel. The wordmark works with and without the icon, and vice-versa, creating unique and flexible ways to express the brand. The TNDC has the strength and confidence to grow, bringing prosperity to Tahltans and stakeholders who live and work in the territory.

Given TNDC’s maturation, we believed it was time to embark on a refresh to our Mandate, Mission, Vision statements, our Values, and our Brand Identity. It was critical for us to refine and simplify our brand identity while honouring our past.

— Carol Danielson, Chair, TNDC Board

Extending TNDC’s brand

TNDC’s brand is designed to work with sub-brands, campaigns and programs, like the Heavy Equipment Operators (HEO) program, as well as partnerships, digital and print campaigns. The new identity’s clean, simple and modern typography integrates with or complements other brands.
